Why Joint Taping?
The major difference between joint taping and skimming is the amount of meters that you cover per wall. A skimmer would skim the entire wall, top to bottom, left to right, every square meter of drywall that is showing will be skimmed.
Whereas this can take time and materials there is also a process called tape jointing. This is a process applied to special tapered edge plasterboards to reduce the amount of time and effort to make a boarded or dot dabbed wall look finished.
Firstly, a special tape called fibre-tape is stuck to where both of the edges of the plasterboard meet, covering the gap in between. This will stop the compounds from cracking. Then we apply a special compound called Gyproc Joint Filler that usually sets within the hour. When the joint filler has set, then we will apply 1 or 2 thin coats of special joint cement over the top of the filler and let it dry out completely before sanding. Once the joints have been sanded then the cement gives off a nice smooth finish ready to be painted over.
Because of the less amount of meterage that is covered per board this process takes less time and less materials to complete a job over skimming the walls entirely.
